I'm giving a talk at the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew – one of the protagonists in my book The Brother Gardeners is Joseph Banks. On his return from the Endeavour voyage (with Captain Cook), he became the nominal director of Kew gardens. He made Kew a storehouse of the empire and London the centre of botany and horticulture.
